After randomly selecting 
the characters A, 4, and 9,
I explored combinations 
of two forms to make a brand
identity. I eventually settled
on the combination of 4
and 9 for YOKU.

The name YOKU comes from the pronunciation of four and and nine in Japanese. Four is often read as "yon" and nine "kyuu," and from there I derived the syllables "yo" and "ku." Together the syllables make "yoku" which means "to do well."

The name made me think of
Japanese stationery shops that
often double as book stores,
and I thought the name and design
fit that type of industry. The
tagline "yoku yomu yoku kaku"
means "read well write well" and
is an alliteration of the syllables
"yo" and "ku.
